Thursday thru Sunday, July 25-28, 2013 — in Historic Bellefonte, PA
featuring Special Guest Artists
Sheila Jordan (vocals) and The Russ Kassoff Trio
BELLEFONTE, PA – JazzPA is thrilled to present the 2013 Summer Jazz Celebration on Thursday through Sunday July 25th through 28th: four days of live jazz in Centre County, including historic Bellefonte PA, State College and the campus of Penn State University. The festival begins with a special festival kick-off concert on Thursday at the Palmer Museum on the Penn State campus (co-sponsored by JazzPA, the Palmer Museum and WPSU). Saturday evening’s concert features internationally recognized jazz vocalist and 2012 NEA Jazz Master Sheila Jordan, together with the Russ Kassoff Trio with Jay Anderson (bass) and Dennis Mackrel (drums) performing two evening sets at the American Philatelic Society (APS) at the old Match Factory. Tickets (general admission) for the Saturday evening APS sets are $15; tickets available beginning July 9 at Websters Bookstore (State College) and Cool Beans (Bellefonte). Ms. Jordan will also present a free one-hour master class Saturday afternoon at the Gazebo in Talleyrand Park to share her wealth of knowledge with festival attendees and local high school students performing during the day. These annual master classes have become a community favorite as guest artists share their personal journey with their instruments, jazz and music - and life in general.
Venues for the 2013 Summer Jazz Celebration include the national headquarters of the American Philatelic Society (APS) at the historic Match Factory, Tallyrand Park's Gazebo and the Main Stage on High Street at Dunlop (next to Talleyrand Park) plus the Hofbrau, Governor's Pub, Centre Crest Nursing Home, the Bellefonte Community Children's Garden, Zola Bistro and the Palmer Museum (PSU). Thursday night’s special kick-off concert Jazz @ the Palmer, hosted by WPSU's jazz DJ Greg Peterson, will be held on the Penn State campus at the Palmer Museum and features the Benny Benack III Trio, celebrating the long legacy of jazz in and from Pittsburgh PA. Admission is free, but tickets are requested: please visit WPSU.org to order tickets for this concert. (Please note – last summer, this concert was sold out, so get your tickets early!)
Friday evening's music features Zeropoint Big Band with Rick Hirsch and Eddie Severn at the APS ($5 at the door), the Arthur Goldstein Quartet with Steve Bowman at The Governors Pub and the Billy Test Duo at the Hofbrau. Other local artists performing during the four days of music include The Tarnished Six, The Friends Band with vocalist Catherine Dupuis, Tommy Wareham (Sunday evening), Carl Ector Duo and Jeff Beck Trio, plus participating instrumental and vocal students from Bellefonte Area High School and the award-winning State College Area High School.
